PNB Fraud: CBI all set to charge PNB ex-MD, other employees

Diamond jeweler Nirav Modi is kept under analysis for deceiving the Punjab National Bank of INR 12,600 crore. Mehul Choksi uncle of Nirav Modi is also being examined and their passports have been debarred.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is prepared to file its first charge sheet on Monday against the former Managing Director of Punjab National Bank and other people involved in the 12,600 fraud case. All the people involved in the fraud executed by the jeweler Nirav Modi have been included under the charge sheet prepared by the CBI.

“The charge sheet will be filed in the designated CBI court in Mumbai,” – said an agency official on in an annoyed condition. The official also mentioned that the charge sheet will also figure the names of over a half dozen officials including the former MD of the PNB who is now the chairperson of another public sector bank.

Modi will be cited in the charge sheet. A first information report (FIR) was registered against the probe agency that covered the fraudulent issuance of the letter of undertaking worth over INR 6400 crore against Nirav.

Till this date, 19 people have been arrested by the agency including the bank official as well as executives from organizations lead by the diamond merchant and Choksi.

The credit limits were provided to Nirav Modi’s firms with the help of the letter of undertakings. These were issued by Firestar International Limited and Firestar Diamonds International Limited – between 2013 and 2017.

Nirav along with Choksi departed India with their families in the first week of January. Any of the members from their family have not returned since the repeated cites from the agency. The passports of Nirav and Choksi have been suspended by the Government of India so as to impact pressure for returning.
